      Telephoto lenses are designed for focusing at variable distances. It has compromises for each distance. The telescope optics is optimized for focusing at infinity.

    Hi, I feel obliged to comment on this stream of dialogue. In doing so, I want to avoid any hurt feelings, but still, I must comment. Celestron telescopes are very fine instruments within the class of catadioptric scopes. They have their strong points, such as light weight, as well as an intensely loyal following. But with all respect, I think that we have to be careful not to malign an entire company's product line (Meade's) just because of a bad sample. Remember the rule from medicine: Do no harm. Professional reviews of the LX200 and LX600 line, which are thoroughly done, and which I have read with considerable care, are UNIFORMLY glowing about the quality of Meade's LX200 and LX600 products in their various sizes. I refer specifically to Sky and Telescope and BBC Sky at Night, whose reviewers are second to none. I also know that companies whose products are under warranty are legally required to make good on any defects, so no beef there, especially since a company as fine as Meade wants to make it right. And on this same point, consider that a major reason for dead electronics is that products have been dropped hard during transit. The company's quality control has nothing to do with it! In the case of Meade's large diameter instruments, it's easy to see how UPS might drop these large boxes hard on the pavement, with no one ever owing up to it. To illustrate, I bought a Stellarvue 130T apochromatic refractor packed in a hard carrying case--this scope was not light by the way. I happened to be home when UPS dropped the scope with a resounding Slam! just outside my front door. The delivery man left, never looking back. No malice, just eager to unload a heavy object at the end of a long, tough day. Fortunately, the scope was fine: it was not damaged in any way. I mention this because Meade has solved some really hard engineering problems in the form of these scopes. Their proficiency in finding deep sky objects really appeals to me for visual and video astronomy, and I am thinking quite seriously about buying one to complete my collection. That said, these are very heavy telescope systems that you only should buy if you have a permanent place to put them, and here I have seen some people buying scopes that are too much for them. These scopes are not portable. Again I ask, please, please lay off Meade (same for Vixen, Orion, etc. etc.) until their products have been given a fair test.

    • @gabem6863
      @gabem6863 5 років тому

      You make a very valid point. The scope, regardless of maker, can leave the factory or seller in perfect condition and you still get a dud in the mail courtesy of the carrier. I got a Meade earlier this year and it was very well packed and protected, but that would have meant nothing if the box would have been dropped.

    • @JamesAdams-ev6fc
      @JamesAdams-ev6fc 5 років тому

      @@gabem6863 Thanks for your message. I think that accidents during transit are a greater than normal risk in the telescope industry, with no blame intended towards any of the shipping companies. They do a great job, but accidents will happen with large, heavy boxes containing delicate electronics and optics--that's why these packages are insured. I also think the excellence of Meade's products in recent years is shown not only by the stream of A+ equipment reviews in astronomy magazines, but besides by their adoption by colleges, universities, and observatories all over North America and beyond. Pending a permanent dark sky site where I can permanently mount the instrument, I plan on buying a 12 inch Meade LX200 or LX600. If you're interested in a carefully done video on this topic, I highly recommend Donnie Brasco's review of the Meade 8 inch LX90. It's well done, and fair.

    About the lithium battery ... it is stated at '9:00' that it is rated at 6 amp at 12V ... on the websites with specifics however it is always indicated at being 3 amp at 12V ( www.celestron.com/products/powertank-lithium ) not a problem for most mounts ... however my new EQ6R-pro is rated at about 4 to 5 amps at 12V ... so it would theoretically damage the battery if i were to go with this power source...

    • @HollomanUFOLanding
      @HollomanUFOLanding 3 роки тому

      I think Bryan was trying to say that the battery is rated for 7AMP hours - 84.4WH divide by voltage (12) = 7 Amp hours. For a mount drawing 4 to 5 amps (which seems a lot) you'd be better off with this bigger version www.celestron.com/products/powertank-lithium-pro#specifications

      There is absolutely no reason to do this. You don't need or want another lens behind any scope. Let alone high end ones like these. It really makes little sense using a really good DSLR like my D850 as the cooled astro specific cameras simply blow them away.

    AP is over priced , even by the longest shot, most of WO, ST on a good SWEQ6 will produce good results. Its'not as though you will one day travel to those stars. They are just photos on your hard drive and that you can savor time and again by looking at it.

      you have the right to your own opinion, that is a guarantee. This does not mean it is remotely correct. People that thrive to get the best equipment that is reliable, guaranteed and has some epic customer service from people that spent their lives in that company, will get 10micron, Software Bisque,AP, and others. When you claim that they are overpriced, i ask you to show how you came up with that conclusion and please back your claim with proof. Thanks

    • @bad_metaphor
      @bad_metaphor 7 років тому

      Apparently, you haven't priced out 10 Micron or Avalon mounts. Also, after owning your EQ6 mount for 10 years, who will you contact when it malfunctions? Where will you get replacement parts? Will there be someone who you can call? Can you do consistent 5 minute UNGUIDED subexposures with your EQ6 at 800mm focal length? Does the stated weight capacity actually cover imaging rigs? Are there easily available software packages that will allow you to use a complex pointing model? If you get into narrowband imaging, will you be able to consistently acquire 30 minute guided subs with round stars? I've owned an EQ6 and had to deal with all the idiosyncrasies of the mount. You start to accept problems and assume that oblong stars or poor guiding is not related to the mount. You blame the seeing, the polar alignment, etc..... until one day, you setup your AP900 mount and notice that the number of "keepers" in an imaging run just increased by 500 percent. Hm...

We have been relatively stuck for the past 100 years or so and need to motivate new minds to come with new ideas of how to reach uncharted space and celestron is helping with that. Good job.

    Nice,but why do you have to be rich to become an Amateur Astronomer these days? Oh, for the good old days when you made your own equipment and were very proud of your accomplishments! Hell, even joining an astronomy club costs more than many of the past home made telescopes and equipment! 😭

    • @Tricyklist
      @Tricyklist 7 років тому

      While I feel your pain, it has never been cheaper to own astronomical equipment. The remarkable level of sophistication and the sheer quality of Astro-Physics equipment is never going to be at the budget end of the market. You still have the potential to build your own [perhaps] more humble equipment depending on your pocket, patience and your manual skills. Countless amateur astronomers still enjoy making their own equipment or assembling telescopes from commercial parts to their own tastes. The market for optical equipment and ATM parts is absolutely huge these days and dwarfs anything from previous decades in both range and quality. If even this is still beyond your pocket then I strongly suggest you seek out secondhand equipment and parts. There are still lots of people grinding and polishing their own optics and the online advice from skilled and advanced opticians has never been better. Cloudy Nights is an excellent resource for all amateur astronomers whatever their particular interests.
